Shop MCP opens another buying channel; the catalog has to answer

Shop MCP brings Shopify search and checkout to compatible agents. To use that channel, merchants need clear catalog data, order monitoring and connected consent rules.

Shop MCP lets a compatible agent search Shopify’s catalog, build a cart and complete a purchase with Shop Pay. The journey can begin inside a conversation. For the merchant, the work starts well before payment: with the quality of product data and the operation that receives the order.

Shopify announced the connection on October 13, 2026. Search works without an API key. When a shopper signs in with Shop, the agent can use saved details; before completing the purchase, it must show the total and payment method for the shopper to confirm.

The catalog now has to speak to agents

A person can interpret a photograph, pick up details from the page or ask a sales associate. An agent needs explicit information. If a title blurs product variants, the currency is unclear or delivery terms appear only in an image, the recommendation and cart may start from the wrong reading.

The catalog therefore has to work as an operational source, with data that matches current inventory, prices and policies.

InformationWhat needs to be clear
Product and variantWhat is for sale and what changes across sizes, colors or versions.
Price and currencyWhat the variant offered by the agent costs.
AvailabilityWhether it can be purchased and the current inventory state.
Delivery and returnsWhere the merchant ships, how long it takes and the conditions for a return.
OrderHow it is identified, confirmed and connected to fulfillment and support.

Shopify says orders from this flow appear in the store’s usual admin. At launch, the flow had no webhooks for status updates; the recommendation is to poll get_checkout. That belongs in the integration design when inventory changes quickly or the business makes specific delivery promises.

Catalog visibility does not mean channel ownership

Shop MCP offers a shared discovery surface. A product can appear alongside other options when someone asks for a recommendation. The brand gains access to a moment close to purchase, but it does not choose which alternatives the agent shows, what context it retains or how it frames the recommendation.

An owned agent serves a different purpose. It can apply the brand’s service rules, query internal systems and hand a case to a person with the right context. Both paths can use the same inventory. The decision is which parts of the experience to delegate and which to keep in a channel the company can govern.

This continues the move of checkout into conversations that we examined when comparing Meta, TikTok and Google. In each case, product discovery, payment and the relationship with the buyer are connected decisions, but they are not the same decision.

Consent belongs in the flow

On October 16, Shopify announced UCP buyer-consent support for Cart MCP and Checkout MCP. These are separate surfaces from Shop MCP. The extension lets agents present choices for analytics, preferences, marketing, and the sale or sharing of data, then send the shopper’s choices with the cart or checkout.

If the agent sends no choice, Shopify applies the store’s default setting for the buyer’s country. If the country is unknown, the default is opt-out. Some permissions require contact details. The system can return a warning and stop checkout until that information is provided. In an integration, permissions and their exceptions become part of the buying journey.

Test the cases that break the journey

Start with a focused set of products that matter to the business. Check what happens when a variant is out of stock, a delivery address falls outside coverage, a promotion expires that day or an item requires installation. Also check how the service team learns that a purchase began with an agent and what information it receives.

Then define the outcome you want. If the priority is broader discovery, prepare the catalog, policies and checkout monitoring. If customers need guidance, exception handling or support after purchase, assess an agent connected to the company’s systems and rules.

Before enabling the channel, decide who responds when the agent cannot complete a purchase and what order record the company will retain. That decision determines whether the new point of sale fits the operation or becomes another conversation someone has to reconstruct.
